The annual Rollins Pass ride is something that has become accustomed to us since the first summer we got to Boulder, Colorado. The history of the old railway that made its way up and over the pass at 11,500’ still has remnants of old railway ties and high alpine glacier views. Although the tunnel is no longer passable by vehicle, the hike up will reward you with stunning views. So pack your PB&J’s and get ready for a Rollins Pass ride and views that never get old, this Saturday, August 5th.

We’ll head up the dirt from East Portal road near Rollinsville up Rollins Pass Road. This part of the road is suitable for all cars and often crowded. It then narrows before heading up the switchbacks leading up to the continental divide. 

As you near treeline, you'll encounter the lovely Yankee Doodle Lake and Jenny Lake. On the east side of Yankee Doodle lake is the Boulder Wagon Trail. We’ll hike our bikes over the abandoned Needle Eye tunnel. We’ll cross a couple historical trestle bridges and regroup on the other side before dropping down into Winter Park on the single track to meet up for lunch. After a lunch stop, we’ll head back up Corona Pass and and then back the way we came. 

Expect steep, loose descents, single track, strenuous hike-a-bikes, high altitude and some of the most epic views in Colorado.

Meet at the Moffat Tunnel East Portal and roll at 8am. Bring lights, flat kit and tools, layers, cash, ID, hydration pack, stoke, flat kit, and thicccc tires. Mountain bikes or gravel bikes with mountain bike tires recommended. This route is rocky, technical and challenging over 58 miles and 5700' of climbing. Weather can unpredictable at high altitudes so please come prepared.
